The Trident Homes Tactix head to Auckland this weekend to take on Greer Sinclair’s former team, the Stars. We talk to the Tactix’ new defender about how she is settling in to Christchurch and what she expects from her old team on Sunday.
You’ve now played every team in the league – who has provided the biggest challenge?
Every team provides different challenges, and they will all come back with a fight the next time we face them, so we have to continue working on our own team structures and units. The Mystics were the one team that got the win so that will be an exciting challenge to take them on again. I’m just excited to take the court with my team.
What have you enjoyed most about your move to Christchurch so far – have you had the opportunity to have a good look around, or is it all business?
Netball takes a lot of my time and all the bits you need to do off-court like physio, recovery, nutrition, coaching. But I have managed to look around Christchurch a bit and it’s incredible. My family came down last week and loved it too. I also have a nannying job with the cutest little baby in the world – he is six months old.
I understand you are flatting with Laura and Aliyah – who is the best cook in the flat?
Well, we are actually doing a little flat My Kitchen Rules/Master Chef competition soon, so all will be revealed who the best cook is then…I think I’ve got it in the bag.
What motivates you?
There are lots of reasons why I do what I do. My family are a huge factor. I have always wanted to wear the black dress and Fern for them ever since I was little. I want my team to win the ANZ Premiership and I want to be the best athlete and person I can possibly be.
How do you overcome nerves/pressure on game day?
Preparation is key. When I am prepared for the game, the nerves seem to be less. Once you start playing, they seem to go away, and I just go out there and enjoy myself.
It was a tough game against the Stars in your season opener, what are you expecting when you meet them again this weekend?
It’s always going to be a tough match against the Stars. Their attacking unit play with amazing ball speed, their middies have great vision and Maia (Wilson) is a great target in the back. Our defensive unit has been improving each game, our movement, confusing the space and creating gains for each other is awesome.
Do you have a pre-game routine?
I wouldn’t say I have a strict routine but a couple of things that I like to have done leading into the game will be: cold shower, roll and stretch, hydrate and food, and watch a bit of footage of the team we are opposing.
What’s your favourite music to listen to pre-game?
Paz (Petera) and Veeks (Koloto) are our DJ, and they play some bangers.
What has it been like working alongside Karin and Jane so far in the Tactix defensive end?
AMAZING! I have just been a sponge to all of the feedback they have given me. Our defensive unit is so fun, snowballing and creating intercepts for each other. Jane and Karin bring that voice and leadership out on court and the ball they get us is so impressive. Karin, Jane, and Laura (Malcolm) are all international players, and they bring composure from their experience and energy from how well they know the game. It’s so cool to be a part of. (Kate) Lloydy and Kimi (Poi) included, I am pretty lucky to be able to learn off such an experienced and talented defensive end.
What’s your favourite pre-game food?
I eat the same pre-game snack every time. Peanut butter and Banana and a drizzle of honey on toast. So yum!
