The Trident Homes Tactix 2024 ANZ Premiership campaign has seen the return of Erikana Pedersen to the Mainland.  We talk to the midcourter about why she decided to come back to Christchurch, who her netball idol was growing up and what will it take to topple the defending champion Mystics in Auckland on Monday night.

What has it been like returning to the Tactix camp?

It’s like I've never left in some respects! I feel like the break away from the ANZ Premiership has really helped me both physically and mentally and I've come back re-energised.

Why did you decide to return to the ANZ Premiership?

In all honesty I was really enjoying my time away from the Premiership and didn't actually have any desire to come back. When Marianne approached me, I was at a crossroad career wise, and it felt right to say yes. It probably made me realise that I still had that hunger to win. Coming back to Christchurch, which I consider my second home, was also a no brainer for me.

Who was your netball idol growing up?

Silver Fern #120, Adine Wilson – I thought she just did the basics well and that's something I've always wanted to nail throughout my career.

How do you overcome nerves/pressure on game day?

I think as the years have gone by this has been a bit easier for me. For me, self-confidence is a key one. Reminding myself that I've played at this level for 11 years and that I've done the work often eases my mind. On game day I really just focus on nailing the basics, doing my job, and having fun while I'm at it!

What’s your favourite pre-game food?

Either a pasta or a ham and cheese toasted sandwich. I do enjoy a smoothie on the side as well.

What are your earliest memories from the netball court?

I was the girl in school that often forgot to cut her nails.  So mum always had to quickly drag me to the control room, and I had to hear the usual ‘you need to be more organised’ spiel!

What’s your favourite dessert?

Tiramisu or gelato from Italy (and preferably eating it in Italy too, ha ha).

The Mystics are defending champions, what is it going to take to beat them in Auckland on Monday night?

The Mystics are probably the big target for everyone this season. We will all need to lift our defensive pressure right through the court to help our in-circle defenders. On attack I think if we can dominate our opponent and continue to be patient with the ball then we will have better chances of coming out on top.

Is there any netball advice you’d like to give a young Erikana Pedersen starting out in the sport?

Just to enjoy the ups, learn from the lows and most importantly look after your body…your future self will thank you for it!
